We all know how luxury vehicle leaders like to play coy and keep their cards to their chest when it comes to new releases and new models. That being said, the word is out that both Bentley and Lamborghini are scheduled to release their first versions of the SUV. Motor Trend, NitroBahn and Automobile Magazine have all recently described some of the details that we can expect in Bentley and Lamborghini’s future.
Regarding plans from Bentley, Karla Sanchez of Motor Trend writes:
We know that Bentley chairman and CEO Wolfgang Durheimer has spilled the beans on a forthcoming luxury Bentley SUV, revealing details on how a hybrid variant of the SUV would be of the plug-in variety, and how it will likely house a W-12 power plant. But we won’t believe it until we actually see it, and that could be as soon as the Geneva Motor Show next month.
Although the British automaker hasn’t confirmed that its reported SUV will debut at the Geneva show, Automotive News is reporting the ultra-lux 4×4 Bentley SUV has a strong possibility of showing its face at the upcoming show. As we’ve reported before, the Bentley SUV will not use an all-new platform, meaning it could instead use the same underpinnings as the Audi Q7, Porsche Cayenne and Volkswagen Touareg.
And while we initially thought there would be a good chance the SUV would utilize the new 6.3-liter W-12 that’s used for the 2012 Audi A8L, Durheimer said it wouldn’t, but confirmed a 12-cylinder would indeed be used as the main power source. Bentley’s boss also told the Financial Times at the Detroit show that a potential sales target for the SUV could be about 2500 units a year. With details slowly starting to emerge, it might not be too far-fetched the Bentley SUV show its face soon, especially since another uber-upscale SUV under the Volkswagen umbrella is rumored for an upcoming debut. Lamborghini will apparently have an SUV ready to unveil — most likely in concept form — at the Beijing auto show this April.
As for the creation of Lamborghini’s first SUV, NitroBahn author describes:
A senior source at the parent company Audi has confirmed that Lamborghini is about to reveal its new concept of a luxurious SUV model. The concept is to set for public airing in April which will be held at the Beijing Motor Show. The production of this SUV version is going to share the same platform with the Gallardo as well as the recently announced Aventador in the late 2016.
“I can’t comment in detail but the speculation in the press is largely correct”, an Audi manager has answered the media when he was questioned about the various reports of outlining plans by Lamborghini to gauge response of public to LM002 successor with the SUV model concept. As a rival for the Maskerti Kubang, and the soon to be announced Bentley SUV model, Lamborghini is planning to sell in small numbers. The company has announced that the number will be likely lesser than 1,500 units per year with an estimated cost of approximately 120,000 pounds. The prime market for the performance oriented SUV will be United States, China and the Middle East.
When it comes to the engine, the 500mm long four-seater SUV is suggested to have the retuned version of Gallardo’s 5.2-litre V10 petrol engine. A hybrid version of the engine is also expected. The source also confirmed that the new model will combine the standard V10 engine with an electric motor as well as a lithium ion battery pack in order to deliver the highest energy and power capacities to the vehicle.
The Lamborghini SUV will be known by its internal code name LB376. Presently at Audi, the so called MLB structure is undergoing massive development and it will be subjected to a dramatic weight reduction program. Due to this the vehicle will weigh less than 2000 kg, the Lamborghini said.
Georg Kacher from Automobile Magazine describes the cryptic vagaries the new Bentley CEO Wolfgang Durheimer used regarding the work on a Bentley SUV:
…it’s an open secret that Bentley is working on an SUV. It will be based on the next Cayenne/Q7 and is bound to attract at least 5000 buyers per year. In the States alone, I can see 20,000 potential customers — all of them current Bentley owners. And all of them have an SUV in the garage.
